Re: Japanese Gaming Sites

CIT already mentioned it before, but Twitter is the best source of information and news on Japanese games that I know of. Tons of Japanese game enthusiasts, historians, news services, arcades, individual developers, game companies, and so on, to follow...

Re: The Official WTF are YOU playing right now thread

Late to the party as usual, but: Dark Souls, got damn! So satisfying on so many different levels! Especially during the beginning of the game, when you're still low-level, have shit gear, and are still trying to figure out the mechanics; the world just feels so vast and wonderfully dangerous! Art di...

Re: The Official WTF are YOU playing right now thread

Cool, will definitely try Sayuri and the upgrades in Rising mode after I've 1CC:ed Arcade mode. Well, we'll see how that goes, but I'm making steady progress so far.

Re: The Official WTF are YOU playing right now thread

Thanks for sharing your impressions. I have similar experiences with Otogi and Metal Wolf Chaos. I guess as soon as action games get too clunky/bulky, it's more difficult for me to get into them -- I always prefer the super-fast and stylish ones. I do enjoy the aspect of mecha games when they manage...

Re: The Official WTF are YOU playing right now thread

Orta is so beautiful. I never put much time into getting good at it, and essentially only treated it as an action-packed roller coaster. I suspected it didn't have enough depth for it to pay off and it's pretty damn long... but I still wonder if a more dedicated approach would have made it even more...

Re: The Official WTF are YOU playing right now thread

Starting to consider myself done. ;) There are still a handful of games I really would like to try, most of all Taroomaru. I see what you mean about that vague sense of progress. Garegga, Border Down and Radiant Silvergun are probably the best examples of that; systems that are so convoluted that y...

Re: The Official WTF are YOU playing right now thread

Wow, that seems awfully... nitpicky. I mean, you can literally just backflip through the entire Stage 1-1 in about 5 seconds. :D Maybe an exaggeration (five seconds sounds like an exaggeration too though?), but I didn't mean that I think it's a game-breaking aspect, and it's still an important crit...

Re: The Official WTF are YOU playing right now thread

After clearing that, I started playing Umihara Kawase. Man the graphics are ass — the blocks throughout the levels look like the candy-striped menus from Mother 2. And that ugly upscaled digital photo of a background! I figured I'd put this one down pretty quickly, but I'm still playing it a few da...

Re: The Official WTF are YOU playing right now thread

Shenmue (which I recently beat by the way, happy to have picked the Japanese language version which was surprisingly enjoyable and easy to follow) Awesome! It helps significantly that most of the dialogue is common speech with repetitions (i.e., the question "Do you know where X is?" is a...

Re: The Official WTF are YOU playing right now thread

Man, the learning curve in that game is so mean... it's hailed as one of the great Capcom classics, but it certainly isn't as easy to get into compared to the Makaimuras or Black Dragon. I never got very far. I've spent almost a month now out in the country... Really looking forward to get back home...

Re: The Official WTF are YOU playing right now thread

Yeah first time for me. Hmm, I don't think replaying the Shenmue games would be worthwhile. I can understand that you would want to freshen up your memory of the story and feel the atmosphere again, but considering they're pretty long, slow (and sometimes quite tedious) games, as well as the fact th...

Re: The Official WTF are YOU playing right now thread

Great picks. I remember being really annoyed with Demon's Blazon for a bunch of reasons, but when I think back on that experience, it still stands out as one of the most memorable ones on the SFC. The atmosphere is just insanely cool. I guess a bunch of games are like that -- Shenmue (which I recent...

I've been wondering about this too. I think Iuchi is still working on Ubusuna at M2, but where did everyone else go? Nakagawa? Suganami!? What are they up to now?

Thanks for the pictures and your impressions, looks neat!

And the outer box with that orange border at least looks better than any XB game I own (those neon green plastic cases makes me want to hide them in some drawer). :yuck: But yeah, not exactly pretty.

Re: [SS] Sega Saturn Power Memory Problems

Many years back when I used the RAM expension for a couple of games, I remember I had to flip the entire console upside down for it to work properly. Other than that, I mostly used the internal back-up memory, but from what I remember the battery for that didn't last very long which was also ...

Re: A Japanese Perspective of "Japan" in Western Video Games

That was hilarious. :) I haven't played any of those games I think, I try to steer clear of Western games with a Japanese theme for this very reason. I guess I expected it to be this bad, but the proof really is cringeworthy; the "Japanese" in those games is definitely just as bad as the w...

Re: On studying Japanese

I can often manage well enough if I have my denshi jisho at hand (have you considered getting one schadenfreude?) I used to subtitle... with fucking laserdisc and an amiga! Haha, that's so cool! Man, I really miss when 80's/90's technology was still new. :) Anyway, I studied Japanese full-time for two years at university, mostly in Sweden but also a couple of months in Japan. I was an incredibly ambitious stud...

I wouldn't mind going through these again just before it comes out. So many memories. Not sure how it will look on a big old flat screen though. There were news earlier this year about Sega registering domains for "Shenmue HD" and "Shenmue Remastered" (https://twitter.com/Shenmu...

Re: Nintendo Switch

I'm not really interested in motion controls (Wii) nor portable gaming (Switch), so... I hope there won't be any must-play exclusives (like with Bayonetta 2 on the Wii U). I have to say I think the new Mario game looks pretty fun in a really weird sort of way, but not enough to make me want to buy a...

Re: The Official WTF are YOU playing right now thread

Yeah we'll see. I will say though that I was incredibly impressed by the little I have played of Shenmue (before I gave up due to the english dub), simply because of the atmosphere and the insane amount of detail. Everything I've seen from the game looks so incredibly cool, so yeah, I hope I won't b...

Re: The Official WTF are YOU playing right now thread

Okami was amazing, except that it was so bloody easy. Such uninspired fights...everything else I found jaw dropping. Probably could have been 10 hours shorter though. I agree about the world being impressive, the graphics are gorgeous. A bit too childish for my taste, but still! But yeah, the fight...

Re: The Official WTF are YOU playing right now thread

Of course I didn't expect something like Devil May Cry. I love slow-paced games almost as much as fast-paced action games, across many genres, not only strategy games but also WRPGs (Fallout, Planescape: Torment etc.), and yes: adventure games (The Day of the Tentacle, Full Throttle, The Last Expres...
