Re: [SFC] Actraiser series

Actraiser 2 is great, hangs with the top 16-bit titles of the same genre. I've also cleared the JP and the US version and found the US hard difficulty to be the most enjoyable one in the long run. An important gameplay element is that enemies lose their hurtbox when hit. This combined with the hard-...

Re: Japanese Film (Live Action)

I once saw Gemini ( Sōseiji ) on Arte / German TV by accident, must have been well over 10 years ago. I liked it well enough and some scenes have stuck with me. It draws its strenght from ruthlessly picturing the animalistic side of human nature though. It seems to be by the same guy that did Tetsuo...

Re: [PC] Steel Assault — action platformer, looking for test

Wolf Fang also has in-game dialogue, as does its sequel Skull Fang (but obviously not a sidescroller). On console, Hyper Iria and especially Burning Rangers (fantastic game) come to mind, giving you directions in the midst of heat. I like your idea of seamlessly connecting levels, but more because o...

Re: Neo-Geo Thread

Magician Lord is also in my NeoGeo top v, mainly because of atmosphere and design, but I also like the gameplay with respawning enemies. I also agree on being positive about Sengoku, while I'm not so sure about the gameplay, the presentation, introducing enemies to the screen etc. is as inspired as ...

Re: On gamengai, Gaijin Punch and videogame theory

some more thoughts: The genre wasn't born out of 3D. 3D / isometric graphics were done before that (in the west, on home computers). I'd speculate that the driving force behind Renegade was the wish to simulate a gang fight, a fight of one or two guys that alone take on a whole fearful, degenerated ...

Re: Belt scroll fans unite, please give me some advice

crowd control is crucial to the genre. other than attacking foes in bulks, this can be done via throwing and finishers. Zero Team for instance offers safer short distance and riskier long distance finishers, this already does spice up things nicely. As for throwing, Arabian Magic does the job nicely...

Re: On gamengai, Gaijin Punch and videogame theory

I like my art theory, and I can't say I'm impressed by that first post of this topic and its quote. If theory peaks at that, I'd probably stop thinking. I suggest the following definition for the genre of belt fighting games: -360° movement -attacks exclusively in two opposing directions -focus on c...

Re: Arabian Magic

played some more, got to the sixth boss with 8340. briefly tested out Rassid, sort of the main chara, the game plays much more like a traditional belt fighter with him, his ultra fast normal attacks being his main source of power. With Afshaal, it's more about his rolling (dash) attack and the incre...

Re: Arabian Magic

played this again today, slight improvement: 8096 with Afshaal (Stage 6).

Afshaal's rolling attack comes in handy for the bird in stage 3, I couldn't find a way to beat him consistently with Sinbad.

I would like to clear this someday.

I liked Torico quite a bit, I don't remember graphics that get in the way. Also, the (english) voices are good. It's a short game and well worth trying.
