Re: The Official WTF are YOU playing right now thread

I'm talking about the SFC version, the only one I've played so far. I plan to check out Shun on PlayStation, maybe later this year. And I agree high-level play looks cool, but I don't want to dedicate the time to get that good. I enjoyed the game enough as a few-hours break from the action side-scro...

Re: The Official WTF are YOU playing right now thread

I am taking a break from the Quintet kick by starting Hagane. I'm hoping I'll coin it in a few nights. :P No sarcasm there. I read many accounts on the internet about how this is one of the hardest SFC games, but I 1CCed it by my 10th try, and I didn't even use bombs. I think I died twice during my...

Re: The Official WTF are YOU playing right now thread

Shenmue (which I recently beat by the way, happy to have picked the Japanese language version which was surprisingly enjoyable and easy to follow) Awesome! It helps significantly that most of the dialogue is common speech with repetitions (i.e., the question "Do you know where X is?" is a...

How did you go about meeting people? At least a sharehouse will give you some people by default, though they may not be great people. I will be telecommuting while in Japan, so I won't be getting anything from the work angle.

Re: Sharehouses in Japan

Around 100,000 yen a month. For a 4000 yen a night place, I should be able to get a monthly rate around my budget. I will check Airbnb, but I'll have to try out a share house at some point too. Staying in one is like a gaijin rite of passage. Most of them are month-to-month, so if I hate it, I'll on...

Re: The Official WTF are YOU playing right now thread

Nah, via a Super Everdrive. With it, I can get an unemulated experience without fighting the price gougers. And you can do cool things like apply a patch to a Seiken Densetsu 3 rom and unlock 3-player play on real SFC hardware, which I dream to play through someday with 2 other buddies. I have no id...

Re: [SFC] Actraiser series

About how long did these take to clear? Probably around 10 hours each. I'd say the second one takes a little longer because it has two boss rushes (!) at the end of the game. I appreciate the length and challenge of both games though since lately I haven't been in the mood for short and challenging...

Re: NHK TV fees

Shit, it seems to be very common in Europe: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Television_licence#Television_licences_around_the_world . Sorry for being a dumb American. Though one could argue that we do something similar in the US, in that every year, some amount of tax dollars are set aside to fund PBS...

Sharehouses in Japan

I'm going to show up in Tokyo in late October this year and stay for a few months, and I'm wondering if you dudes have any experience with sharehouses in the city. I haven't done much research into housing yet, but the two names that keep popping up are Sakura House and Oak House. I have heard good ...

NHK TV fees

Sorry for being late to this party, but I was reading about owning a TV in Japan and someone mentioned having to pay a fee for it, whereupon I stumbled upon this silliness: http://en.rocketnews24.com/2013/12/04/dont-own-a-television-japans-public-broadcaster-doesnt-care-but-does-still-wants-your-mon...

[SFC] Actraiser series

I recently beat the Japanese versions of Actraiser and Actraiser 2. I chose the Japanese version for the first game because I read on the internet it's more challenging (plus the usual story of uncensored sprites and "adult" themes and so on). There's some good information about the differ...

Re: The Official WTF are YOU playing right now thread

I've been on an SFC kick these past few weeks. I started with some DoReMi Fantasy, Magical Pop'n, then Demon's Blazon action. All were easy but fun, though Demon's Blazon disappointed me. I had more fun playing the Red Arremer game on the Famicom, partly because your floating duration isn't infinite...

Thanks! I'll have some reading to do this weekend. I noticed you changed the format of the URLs, including in the forum (i.e., it's "forum.gamengai.com" now instead of "gamengai.com/forum"). Are you okay with all the broken links this will produce? Think of all the poor people wh...

Dreamcast JP Shenmue I & II, JP Maken X, US Nintendo DS

I got some goodies for sale. Let me know if you're interested in any of this stuff or wanna see pictures or whatever, and we'll work out friend prices. I'll wait about a fortnight and then post about these goodies elsewhere. All the discs have at worst light scratches. I played through all the games...

I still have two capacitors lying around (I got four of them because they're tiny and easy to misplace). I could ship them to your Asialand residence, but I doubt you'll get them by the weekend.

Re: [SS] Sega Saturn Power Memory Problems

I mainly just use the "insert cart, take out cart, insert cart, now leave a tiny gap, rinse and repeat..." strategy. I've read some (probably paranoid) recommendations in various forums to remove the RAM expansion as little as possible, probably because the weak metal contacts in the Satu...

Re: A Japanese Perspective of "Japan" in Western Video Games

A counter-argument is that the Oriental Riff was probably created by Westerners in the first place so they can use it however they want. I've played the riff to a few native Chinese friends in the past, and none of them had heard it before. I explained to them that if you played it to pretty much a...

Re: Jet Set Radio series

Has anyone beaten the Japanese version — not De La, the original — of Jet Set Radio? I've read several web pages that say the ending credits in the original Japanese version are interactive — i.e., you can skate around and spraypaint the credits yourself — but in this YouTube video of the ending cre...

Re: On studying Japanese

I studied Spanish for my four years of high school (the only foreign language offered at my small school, in fact), and what do I have to show for it today? I can pick out some words in a Spanish text, but forget writing or listening. Though when I played Biohazard 4 many years back, I could underst...

Re: On studying Japanese

Now, I'd use digital but I don't know if it would stick as well. Because on paper you'd be writing the cards out by hand, whereas on the computer you're either typing it or copying it from someone else? The main difference I've noticed between the two is that the former forces me to read my poor ha...

Re: On studying Japanese

Would you say it's more of a flaw in Kanji recognition function of the app or your own handwriting? It's hard to draw a kanji using my laptop's trackpad, but I do the best job I can, with the correct stroke order to boot. Maybe sometime I'll try using a mouse to see if I get better results. But man...

Re: On studying Japanese

I mostly use it for looking up kanji that I don't know the meaning, pronounciation of (you can simply draw the kanji like on a DS), and the dictionaries I have on it are more comprehensive/detailed and in at least in some respects easier to use than many others. But actually, for someone who alread...

I can often manage well enough if I have my denshi jisho at hand (have you considered getting one schadenfreude?) Re: On studying Japanese

Ah, the man himself! I was hoping you would reply. this might crush your spirit, but I never stopped studying, really... only stopped actively studying. Nah, no crushing here. I'd say that even in our native language we never really "stop" studying: we just switch from active to passive st...
