Re: On studying Japanese

I used to subtitle... with fucking laserdisc and an amiga! Haha, that's so cool! Man, I really miss when 80's/90's technology was still new. :) Anyway, I studied Japanese full-time for two years at university, mostly in Sweden but also a couple of months in Japan. I was an incredibly ambitious stud...

Re: The Official WTF are YOU playing right now thread

I wouldn't mind going through these again just before it comes out. So many memories. Not sure how it will look on a big old flat screen though. There were news earlier this year about Sega registering domains for "Shenmue HD" and "Shenmue Remastered" (https://twitter.com/Shenmu...

Re: Nintendo Switch

I'm not really interested in motion controls (Wii) nor portable gaming (Switch), so... I hope there won't be any must-play exclusives (like with Bayonetta 2 on the Wii U). I have to say I think the new Mario game looks pretty fun in a really weird sort of way, but not enough to make me want to buy a...

Re: The Official WTF are YOU playing right now thread

Yeah we'll see. I will say though that I was incredibly impressed by the little I have played of Shenmue (before I gave up due to the english dub), simply because of the atmosphere and the insane amount of detail. Everything I've seen from the game looks so incredibly cool, so yeah, I hope I won't b...

Re: The Official WTF are YOU playing right now thread

Okami was amazing, except that it was so bloody easy. Such uninspired fights...everything else I found jaw dropping. Probably could have been 10 hours shorter though. I agree about the world being impressive, the graphics are gorgeous. A bit too childish for my taste, but still! But yeah, the fight...

Re: The Official WTF are YOU playing right now thread

Of course I didn't expect something like Devil May Cry. I love slow-paced games almost as much as fast-paced action games, across many genres, not only strategy games but also WRPGs (Fallout, Planescape: Torment etc.), and yes: adventure games (The Day of the Tentacle, Full Throttle, The Last Expres...

Re: The Official WTF are YOU playing right now thread

I've been playing a couple of PS2 titles that I never played before, right now Ico (which is super slow and annoying) and God Hand (which is fast and super fun). I really don't understand how a game like Ico can get so much praise, I mean it's hardly a game? You just walk around holding some helples...

Re: Japanese developed games not physically released in Japan

I read about them here: https://www26.atwiki.jp/gcmatome/pages/ ... d_a6f38209

It says there were location tests for both in Japan, but that they were only released overseas. Hard to be completely sure with arcade games though...

Re: Japanese developed games not physically released in Japan

Here are a couple more that I'm pretty sure were never released in Japan (well, some of them were but in other formats or for different systems)! (badass soundtrack for GBC Action Man: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aUi9lXSzSvc) Game Boy: TaleSpin The Little Mermaid Game Boy Advance: Buffy the Vamp...

Another one for MD/Genesis: Hook

Ported from the SFC game by Ukiyotei (the company behind the wonderful Karura-Oo) by Core Design.

Re: Japanese developed games not physically released in Japan

Oh ok, I never knew about that connection. The Master System / Mark III is probably the game system I'm least familiar with among all the major consoles, I don't even own one yet. Really looking forward to properly sitting down and enjoying those Sonic the Hedgehog, Wonder Boy and Mickey Mouse games...

Re: Japanese developed games not physically released in Japan

Another one for the European Mega Drive and Genesis is "Decap Attack". It has the same engine as "Magical Hat no Buttobi Turbo! Daibooken" for the Japanese Mega Drive, but has otherwise been modified well beyond recognition. I like Decap Attack a lot better.

Chikyuu Booeigun series

After watching a couple of videos on youtube, I really don't know what to make of this series; looks like a weird joke in some ways, but still seems like they could be a pretty fun?

From someone who has tried them: how has the series evolved? And how would you rank them in terms of overall quality?

Has anybody watched Shin Godzilla (2016) yet? Not a fan of the series/genre, but this trailer gave me goosebumps, and the movie seems to have gotten good reviews generally.

Someone got a hold of a bunch of prototypes, including THQ's Game Boy version of Akira:

Kind of lost interest in these games once I realized they weren't developed by a Japanese company, though.

Re: Are we old yet? Or: Do you still collect?

I stopped collecting many years ago. Having a limited budget, there's so much else I'd rather invest my money in, rather than just having a collection of expensive stuff on the shelves. I do miss my cabinets and PCBs, maybe I'll try to buy a small arcade library again someday, but definitely not now...

Re: Japanese developed games not physically released in Japan

Great list! There's also Trampoline Terror! for the Genesis. A Japanese release was planned as Explode Star which never fell through obviously, though they apparently printed a flyer: http://blog-imgs-36.fc2.com/r/e/t/retrogaming/explodestar01.jpg There's a Masaya logo there, but I believe it was de...

Re: Akira for MegaDrive

Found some more info here: http://segaretro.org/Akira Akira is an unreleased Sega Mega Drive and Sega Mega-CD video game based on the 1988 film of the same name, once set to be published by THQ. Akira is one of the more notable video game absentees of the early 1990s, as when THQ acquired the licens...
