Awesome stage 2 boss strategy discovered with Tulks!: When he first jumps in from the background grab him and take him as far to the right as you can (I think it helps to space out the 2 grapple attacks) then neutral powerbomb and juggle with the walking combo. After the final hit of the walking com...

Yeah I remember doing two air throws in a row but I figured it was because one was jumping forward and one upward. Is this what you're talking about? Also I saw a video of Tulks doing a powerbomb with a blue trail and a counter combo where he changes faces or something. How do I do that? :) Started ...

I like the Japanese genre designations, just don't go by what the developers themselves use. Otherwise Strider becomes a "Stunt Action Game" and Biohazard becomes something silly like "Survival Horror". Oh wait...

Aaaaand it kinda sucks. :D Not really but it's got nothing on the classics outside a Youtube montage. This false alarm has been brought to you by JoshF. Back to playing Cyvern for Shumps. Actually maybe someone could salvage this thread by mentioning any PC-exclusive side-scrollers worth playing. To...

[PC] Crescent Pale Mist

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xEVNdd3LoSk I don't know much about this game yet but it looks amazing. Looks to have all the things I like in gaming: side-scrolling structure, danmaku bullets, shooting mixed with melee action, combo porn, wall jumps, and a grapple beam. Fortunately it appears not t...

Yeah but to be able to wipe out bosses fast it inhibits you're ability to take out lots of regular enemies fast. Plus, we don't know how intense the later stages are going to get.

Why the hell does IGA stil think grinding in an action game is so cool? Every game he makes is proof why it doesn't work.

I don't know when the change happened or what game signified it, but if you look at some of their early 90s arcade games they were basically bad SFC games. I know the Great Battle series really picks up at like IV, and then they came out with a bunch of awesome arcade shooters. I never got into Supe...

So Last Survivor is basically Madou Monogatari in real time? That SD Gundam game looks tantalizing but if it's anything like the Ultraman belt scroll game it wouldn't be much to play. Then again Banpresto magically morphed into an awesome company somewhere around 94-95 so maybe that's one of the ear...

How about a superhero who gets his powers from earthquakes known as Haitiman? It was probably perceived as insensitive to the tragedy.

So I got this book and it is indeed the shit. Just flipped to a random page and my vocab automatically doubled (putting "sa" at the end of an adjective to make a noun). I've been having fun looking up and translating the lyrics to theme songs and singing karaoke when no one is around. :P

This and similar shows must have had a huge impact on many other Japanese developers and the cinematics in their games. I could start a thread on it. Rockman has a lot of examples of this, like Blues announcing himself by whistling (inspired by the character Saburo/Hakaider from Jinzou Ningen Kikai...

Older tokusatsu shows have a lot of weird film tricks. I remember one scene in Gavan where they play a shot in reverse to make it look like he mounts a horse by doing an upside down flip, lol. Soooooooo much more fun and imaginative than western action/sci-fi shows, which are so afraid of committing...

It's no joke about how much leeway developers had back then. The best example I can think of is Cosmo Police Galivan, which is "based" on Toei's Uchuu Keiji (Space Shefiff) franchise. In fact the name "Galivan" was made by combining the names of the heroes from two different seri...

Whatchoo talkin' 'bout? Remember what happened when SNK did the whole limited printing thing? The diehard/rich fans fought over the scraps and made the secondhand prices even more ridiculous than the firsthand ones and put the products out of the hand of ordinary folks, hence people in South America...
