Re: [ETC] Try Tower Akihabara

Stopped in at Try today because I wanted to play some Gradius and HEY only has the POS Gradius III. Not sure if I'm just spoiled because of the autofire option on the PSP Gradius Collection, but their copy of the original seemed hard as balls for some reason. I'm still not very good at playing for s...

Re: GP's music picks

Ah crap, I forgot you lived up in the Tohoku area. Sorry if my Tepco jab was out of line. I'm envious of your SAW acquisition, that was my first Aphex Twin and one of the first electronic albums I "bought" through eMusic when I finally discovered electronica could be more than crappy Eurot...

Re: GP's music picks

Interesting, thanks for that. It was that "The Beatles in Mono" box set that I remember everyone being so jazzed about five years ago. And I suppose that makes sense why the mono releases are preferred, if people think they comprise the band's original vision. I guess that makes the stereo...

Re: GP's music picks

Is is that there are different versions of the songs themselves on the mono and stereo releases, or just that they're mastered differently to take better advantage of one channel vs. two? I always thought it was the latter, and that most fans very vocally preferred one or the other. Everything else ...

Re: GP's music picks

Here you go. It's really good--very dubby, which is a big departure that makes it a little less immediately accessible than Dusker or Ampday , but the core is still very Kiln. I'm not really a Beatles fan, but I've heard the mono vs. stereo thing is a pretty contentious debate among the faithful, a...

Re: GP's music picks

Yup. And the FLACs were sitting in my inbox ready to download this morning. :) Just waiting on my shipping confirmation notice for the vinyl (along with Kiln's latest album). It's going to be like Christmas when I move back to the states and get to tear into all the mail order boxes filled with reco...

Had a couple of really lucky hauls at some of the nearby Disk Unions & Book Offs over the past few weeks. http://s4.postimg.org/ijhz70bfx/records.jpg L-R, top to bottom: Global Communication, 76:14 (obviously); Biosphere, Substrata2 ; Arctic Hospital Citystream ; YMO, Technodon ; Alva Noto + Ryu...

Re: Volgarr the Viking

Damn, this game is tough. It's also one of those that makes it incredibly obvious that you are responsible for your own failures; part of a level will be a complete pain in the ass until you memorize the proper path, and then you can slide on through without breaking a sweat. The one complaint I hav...

Re: Volgarr the Viking

Just to let everyone know, this is now on sale for $5.99 on GOG.com (DRM free!) as part of their winter sale. I'm looking to scoop it up with a few others on my wishlist, so maybe I'll have something to contribute to the discussion here soon.

Re: Wings of Honneamise (Shinjuku)

That was really excellent; thanks again for the ticket hook-up. I need to get better with my film credit speed reading--I spent half the film trying to decide if Sadamoto was behind the character designs, and only managed to confirm it when I got my phone out on the train. I also feel like I should ...

Re: Zemmis: Consolized MSX

Out of an edition of 100, ouch. Wonder what the USB ports are for. And I wonder what the practical difference would be between running a game from the original cart, or off of an SD card. Whatever happened to that MSX-on-a-chip that seemed to be getting a lot of hype about 5 or 6 years back? Did tha...

Re: Volgarr the Viking

The last time I tried using Wine was an attempt to run Unreal on a 500Mhz Celeron laptop running something like Mandrake 8 back in late 2001. I'm not sure if it's any better now, but that experience swore me off of trying to game on any OS but Windows for a full decade. Though to be fair, those were...

Re: Volgarr the Viking

It's DRM-free on GOG.com. Seems to be Windows-only for now, but you never know about the future--it's pretty amazing how many indie devs are supporting Mac & Linux lately. EDIT: Some folks are reporting it runs fine under the Mac version of WINE, if you're up for some self-flagellation outside ...

Re: Wings of Honneamise (Shinjuku)

So, speaking of movies involving flight and no English subtitles, Kaze Tachinu is really, really good. Hell of a movie for Miyazaki to make his exit on. And I'm kicking myself for not paying more attention at the credits to see that Hideaki Anno was the voice behind the main character.

Re: GP's music picks

Do you use those anti-static sleeves from Nagaoka? As I haven't made the change jet with my collection I'm curious what's a good sleeve on the market. Are the Nagaoka ones the U-shaped ones? I'm not a huge fan of that style, to be honest--the place I ordered the sleeves I use threw one (in the same...

Re: GP's music picks

I'm not really sure. The originals were standard weight as well, so maybe they just went with that. I wonder what the difference is in cost for pressing 140g vs. 180g; I'm also curious as to whether or not that requires any significant changes in the pressing process (e.g. the ways the masters are e...

Pretty sure everyone who's interested would have already heard by now, but in the event that you haven't I'll just leave this here: Boards of Canada vinyl represses. I feel like I should turn in my geek card or something, because I really thought I had a better handle on the history of the medium. Or maybe my Gainax history just sucks more than I thought. Re: Busted controller port on PS2

Aren't most of those contact cleaner sprays/pens just mostly ethyl alcohol anyway? I had some sort of contact cleaner pen back home that I'd gotten at Radio Shack a decade prior which I'm pretty sure was like 97% alcohol, with the remainder being some sort of buffering solution. Once that ran out, I...

The Mario Kart series is only fun as a party game, but that's irrelevant because the only party game you'll ever need is Bomberman '93 (or '94 if you don't mind the weird dinosaur things).

There! Saved y'all the cost of a Wii U!
