Re: Taito Classic Posters Fair

D'oh, completely forgot the thing was yesterday. Not that it really matters, because I was sprinting to finish the final paper of the term in time to make last train, so it's not like I had time. Plus, a couple of the assholes in my department thought it was a great idea to buy an electric shaved ic...

Re: Taito Classic Posters Fair

I love real craft beers far more than I love pale facsimiles of the least boring aspects of British pub food and drink. I also love real pizza, absent of weirdness like shrimp and corn and mayonnaise. I think this is a great idea. (Been meaning to try that place for a while, actually--a friend's unc...

Re: Taito Classic Posters Fair

Got my last big paper of the semester due by midnight that night, and knowing me I won't have it finished in advance. If through some miracle I do pull it off, wouldn't mind going down there if anyone else will be there, but I'm deathly allergic to Japanese queues wherein the good stuff's guaranteed...

Re: Horror Visual Novels (Human Entertainment, Chunsoft, et

I had initially tried to build up the internal database, but I'm finally coming to terms with the realization that it just doesn't work for me. The only vocab/kanji/grammar I retain is the stuff I come across in real life a few times, because then it's easier to form an attachment between some abstr...

Re: Horror Visual Novels (Human Entertainment, Chunsoft, et

It's pretty discouraging to spend an hour jumping back and forth between the screen and your dictionary and then realize you've just made it through about five minutes of actual gameplay.

Re: GP's music picks

I'm always jealous when I see new pictures you've taken. Did you get to talk to him after the show? Still waiting on the Geogaddi pics, btw, unless you haven't got it yet. So here's a recommendation that's really far outside of my normal musical tastes. This dude Justin Broadrick is pretty well know...

Re: The inevitable next gen thread...

I don't know if I'm just growing less interested in gaming, or less interested in consoles specifically, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to sit this one out. Last gen I got a Wii on launch and enjoyed a few of the titles, but before moving out of the States it had pretty much just become the dedicated...

Re: GP's music picks

24-bit WAV is a great choice, ORLY? http://xiph.org/~xiphmont/demo/neil-young.html I meant as in having the option to get the 24-bit WAVs, as choice in audio formats is good, and if a store is offering 24-bit they're probably likely to have more sane and usable options like FLAC or Vorbis. 192khz i...

Re: GP's music picks

Holy crap, they did make FLAC and WAV available! Thanks for the heads-up, I would have just continued being bitter about my 320 MP3s while waiting to stumble across the CD used so I could rip and re-sell it. Still not a fan of how they see fit to charge $2 extra for lossless/uncompressed downloads f...

Re: GP's music picks

I don't know what's going on in the background of Juno's website, but any time I navigate to a new page it completely freezes my browser for a minute. In any case, they have all the College releases, but there's something really fucked about their pricing. That EP is listed as $23, though is current...

Re: GP's music picks

I'll have to see--that date lands right in the middle of an obnoxiously busy few weeks. Presentations, putting together a paper for a conference, formal submission of research topic within my department... It's a pity, though, because 2,000 yen is like the least stupidly priced event I've seen yet. ...

Re: Breakout: Google Style

Not for much longer! I didn't even know iGoogle was still around. I used it for a while quite a few years ago, but kinda fell off of it when I switched browsers to Opera and found more use for the Speed Dial start page instead. Having an Android phone now pretty much gives me the same sorts of info ...

Re: Breakout: Google Style

These guys do such fun stuff; then again, I wish they would put half as much effort into keeping up the unofficial "don't be evil" motto as they did making fun Easter Eggs like this. Still trying to get my head around how they killed XMPP support in Google Talk with the new conversion to G...

Re: LAST CHANCE! Pink Bullets Zine Vol. 1 time-limited sale

Well, I'm all for the idea, but then again I'd like a copy, so I'm hardly of an impersonal opinion. However, is this age of digital reproduction, there's little argument for creating artificial scarcity by just limiting the work to the physical product (unless of course you don't currently have it i...

Re: Expat Retirement Plans...

I'm not the most knowledgeable, but here's what I know of IRAs and the traumatic experience of having to file U.S. taxes for a year in which I moved to Japan halfway through. First, you've got two types of IRAs: traditional, and Roth. There's some mumbo-jumbo about how you can get slightly penalized...

Re: GP's music picks

I think yours was probably the best capture. I've seen another one that got a closer and slightly clearer view of the screen, but the audio does screwy things, like cutting out on one stereo channel halfway through the movie and then switching channels a minute later. Was there a pretty big crowd? I...

Wow, congratulations on the Geogaddi ! And that's a really great price, too--let's have some pictures when the spoils arrive! Re: GP's music picks

Yeah, I'm generally more on the side of wanting to listen to albums vs. just look at them, but I also want to buy ones that I intend to hang on to for the long run, and if there's a lot of wear it feels like I'm halfway to the grave. The BoC album wasn't terrible, but I just couldn't do it--maybe it...

Re: GP's music picks

Well, made it out and the album was still there, but I just couldn't bring myself to pull the trigger on it. I'm a bit of a condition queen, I guess, and while the price was great I couldn't get past the obvious wear around the corners and edges. Plus, I can't quite shake the nagging conviction that...

Re: GP's music picks

That's called crate digging. It's very socially acceptable. Start from the back, pull them up in succession, drop when you realize it's not what you want. Split spines and dented edges! It's in the sale section though, which is on the other side of Electronica. If you want me to grab it, I can. A f...

Re: GP's music picks

I still have yet to explore Shibuya and all its music stores, but God bless Disk Union. The ones in Ikebukuro and Shinjuku have a fairly underwhelming vinyl selection; you could possibly snag some good deals if you're willing to rifle through the entire selection, but the stores are so cramped that ...

Retro-[ish] game shops in Tokyo

I was certain there was at least one previous thread or longish discussion on this topic, but the site's search isn't turning anything up for me yet. Basically, a large amount of reading HG101 on the train has gotten me in the mood to pick up some of the cheaper PSX and Saturn gems they cover quite ...

I always wondered about the efficacy of ad revenue myself--it seemed like something of a too-good-to-be-true proposition. You mean all I do is put this little block of code into my webpage, and I'll get money??
