Re: On studying Japanese

As for the JLPT, I really struggle with the reading of passages. I can understand what it says, but figuring out the answer is another matter entirely. The vocab you either know of don't know, listening is extremely easy if you've lived here for a long time. パターンで学ぶ This is for L1, but I think it s...

Re: Import stores list

Are they still around? I remember they were the first "business" that noticeably got into the Yahoo -> Ebay arb. I was kind of getting out of it, and was relatively small potatoes by comparison. They had more dough, time, and space, so just bid up all of it. Surprised the Japanese nerds di...

Re: On studying Japanese

Flash cards i'm old, so they were on paper. Very small paper with a hole in them, and then put on a key ring looking thing. I had loads of those. Now, I'd use digital but I don't know if it would stick as well. Heisig I'm familiar with that, but I don't think that it would work better for me than t...

Re: On studying Japanese

You'll have to school me on this a bit. Regardless of medium used, wouldn't you have to watch the video several times to make sure your subtitles are displayed at the appropriate times? With digital, you can get it down in 2 goes I think. Generally you use something to give visual queues when the d...

Re: On studying Japanese

I can really only comment on my own methods, which are very traditional. That being said, I first started studying Japanese (fuck me) 24 years ago... this might crush your spirit, but I never stopped studying, really... only stopped actively studying. I read Japanese books now, and take quite a few ...

Re: Errors on game entry pages

I won't go mongo, but it will be close to that when it's done. The version of the site now is basically a sandbox. I wanted to move from the old provider to save money, and the PHP stuff just flat out broke. I figured it was time. Anywho, I haven't forgotten about this. Might have a chance to dig in...

Re: The Official WTF are YOU playing right now thread

Shenmue 3 is on my radar. The original had me hooked due to atmosphere alone. I had only lived in Japan about 2 years (maybe less) when it came out, but man... loved it. Felt like I had taken a train down to Yokosuka 1986. I need to figure out WTF I'm going to do about that the upcoming sequel. Defi...

Re: Nintendo Switch

You got Splatoon on the Wii-U. :) I got that for my kid... does nothing for me. That being said though, the only system I've played much at all in the last year is the Wii (SMB Galaxy) and that is pretty much limited to the Xmas break. My GC busted, and didn't buy a new one before leaving Japan. I c...

Re: PC Engine system card confusion and other Qs

This is actually quite interesting. I had two separate Turbo systems RGB modded, and they both came with their own pitfalls. I can't recall if I had this one or not (probably) but one of them had a decent amount of jitter. Ironically, I didn't play either of them all that much. Way too many games an...

Re: Nintendo Switch

Agreed for the most part... would love to see some "apps" on this. Doesn't Wii-U have that shit? I assume it can be added later, and we all know they will not be able to keep up w/ demand out of the gates anyway. Honestly, I just want to play the new Zelda. Not sure if I'll have time to bo...

Re: The Official WTF are YOU playing right now thread

The last time I played JSRF was when I made that semi-angry post about how it let me down after playing through the first game. I still think about it from time to time though because goddam that engine is so smooth and gorgeous and a nice improvement over the Dreamcast version. But the price you h...

Re: Errors on game entry pages

I know I'm probably the only person in the world who still looks at these, but I really enjoy checking out the cover scans and reading the informative and sometimes funny write-ups. But I'm sad to see a lot of the images on the index pages are missing, and game pages like Chi no Rondo and others gi...

Nintendo Switch

Who's getting one? Honestly I'm only excited for Zelda, but I assume something else will catch my fancy. Not sure how long I will wait but I think I will eventually get one.

Re: The Official WTF are YOU playing right now thread

Okami was amazing, except that it was so bloody easy. Such uninspired fights...everything else I found jaw dropping. Probably could have been 10 hours shorter though. I actually just beat Super Mario Galaxy (hardcore, huh?) Deciding whether to get all the stars or not. I got a J-Xbox and am wanting ...

Super Mario Galaxy (first one). Pretty fun... just never get an chance to play more than short bursts.

Just now reading how many stars there are, not sure if I will get them all. I got all 120 in SMG2, which was fun, but I had fewer hobbies then, ironically.

I'm still plugging away at Dark Seal off and on. I can almost make it to the end of stage four before game over. I am going to get back on it this weekend. I am also still playing Sengoku Blade and working on a one loop clear with Junis. I am almost there but the lanterns...oh man the lanterns. I h...

Re: Documentary on the Japanese Game Preservation Society

Makes you wonder if anyone at the Falcom offices even have one. Who'd have thought... a fucking cassette tape. Magnetic medium though.. it won't work forever. Will it hold it's value after? Glad I have no desire for such a thing. :)

Re: Documentary on the Japanese Game Preservation Society

Interesting documentary. Thanks for providing the link! I’m wondering if the Galactic War 1 tape by Falcom that Joseph presents at the end of the documentary and that he spent 15 years looking for is the same that Beep in Akihabara is selling for 450,000 Yen at the moment? Does it even work? Is the...

Re: Documentary on the Japanese Game Preservation Society

Cheers! Looks like Shou's home.

Pretty cool stuff -- especially the castte games. I know they are (or recently were) sought after by a lot of groups. Surely they have very little life left. Are the DECO cassettes all preserved? Looks like at least one showed up.

And that Sigma joystick!

AFAIK, there is a Japanese language version (called Mach Go Go even) that was loke-tested. Japanese text, and all, and a certain member here has at least scene it (if not own it).

Re: My Tumblr Site

You got to love 1P. And who could forget 2P? There's more Lost Worlds art I need to scan. Eventually I'll put all this stuff on Mediafire too, in higher quality. Where did it originate from? I was always on the lookout for offbeat stuff like that but don't recall an LW pieces sticking out. I tried ...
