Re: GP's music picks

A rare copy of A Certain Distance by Lusine is up for a mere 27.99 EUR on Discogs. Shipping to the US is pricey, but even so, it's almost half of what I just paid for a copy, and a fraction of what it usually runs on Discogs.

Re: Nintendo Switch

yeah, the reviews of BotW seem to be pretty undeniable. We knew the major publications would rate it 10/10 and wank to it, but even hard core nerds that are not so easily amused are giving it full points. I've read a few "not impressed" reports at shmups, but most of it is beyond positive....

Re: Import stores list

Yahoo Japan's interface, like 99% of interfaces in Japan, is dated and flawed, but they have perfected the art of the auction. "It's in mint condition, but if you demand pristine condition, please refrain from bidding".

Re: Import stores list

It was high drama back then, for sure. Wish i had the English threads where they defended their actions. Last "debate" I recall was on Assembler, was one here I advocated a well-picked collection is far more impressive, and one of them argued (ad naseum) that a complete collection (IE, the...

Hahaha -- indeed that's one of them! There was another though. Something w/ the word "wolf" in it no? And I think adol_france Here's some more fun: http://pc6.2ch.net/test/read.cgi/yahoo/1102428377/ http://natto.2ch.net/test/read.cgi/yahoo/1018603005/ Memory lane, gentlemen. Memory lane.

Re: Import stores list

Yamatoku was (is?) one of the few accounts back in the day that actually had the same name, or similar enough, on both YJ and Ebay. I'm not totally sure, but they may have even said in their YJ Profile that they were resellers. Obviously the collectors (especially the Japanese ones) aren't huge on t...

I pre-ordered the vinyl months ago, and have yet to download the album (might just wait for the vinyl) but Sensorimotor by Lusine is out on Ghostly.

Re: Nintendo Switch

Cheers for that. The screen scratching scares me... especially these days with very scratch-resistant glass. The browser, which hilariously enough was hotly debated in the thread at Shmups (wut?!) does seem pretty strange these days, but also just software so they can probably alleviate that later i...

Re: Nintendo Switch

I'm with you on that. Honestly, I have little time now, and I'm trying to do some really expensive shit, so I have to hold off. And realistically, if it's in English I might have the GF watch me play Zelda...at least a little. If it's Japanese that's not gonna happen. Also gotta think of the Mario g...

Re: On studying Japanese

I went to Cuba recently, and quite honestly, even w/ the accent that I was totally not ready for, I was able to get some basic ideas across... something that took serious years in Japanese.

Re: On studying Japanese

Because on paper you'd be writing the cards out by hand, whereas on the computer you're either typing it or copying it from someone else? The main difference I've noticed between the two is that the former forces me to read my poor handwriting plus makes my wrist hurt (who writes regularly by hand ...

Re: On studying Japanese

As for the JLPT, I really struggle with the reading of passages. I can understand what it says, but figuring out the answer is another matter entirely. The vocab you either know of don't know, listening is extremely easy if you've lived here for a long time. パターンで学ぶ This is for L1, but I think it s...

Re: Import stores list

Are they still around? I remember they were the first "business" that noticeably got into the Yahoo -> Ebay arb. I was kind of getting out of it, and was relatively small potatoes by comparison. They had more dough, time, and space, so just bid up all of it. Surprised the Japanese nerds di...

Re: On studying Japanese

Flash cards i'm old, so they were on paper. Very small paper with a hole in them, and then put on a key ring looking thing. I had loads of those. Now, I'd use digital but I don't know if it would stick as well. Heisig I'm familiar with that, but I don't think that it would work better for me than t...

Re: On studying Japanese

You'll have to school me on this a bit. Regardless of medium used, wouldn't you have to watch the video several times to make sure your subtitles are displayed at the appropriate times? With digital, you can get it down in 2 goes I think. Generally you use something to give visual queues when the d...

Re: On studying Japanese

I can really only comment on my own methods, which are very traditional. That being said, I first started studying Japanese (fuck me) 24 years ago... this might crush your spirit, but I never stopped studying, really... only stopped actively studying. I read Japanese books now, and take quite a few ...

Re: Errors on game entry pages

I won't go mongo, but it will be close to that when it's done. The version of the site now is basically a sandbox. I wanted to move from the old provider to save money, and the PHP stuff just flat out broke. I figured it was time. Anywho, I haven't forgotten about this. Might have a chance to dig in...

Re: The Official WTF are YOU playing right now thread

Shenmue 3 is on my radar. The original had me hooked due to atmosphere alone. I had only lived in Japan about 2 years (maybe less) when it came out, but man... loved it. Felt like I had taken a train down to Yokosuka 1986. I need to figure out WTF I'm going to do about that the upcoming sequel. Defi...

Re: Nintendo Switch

You got Splatoon on the Wii-U. :) I got that for my kid... does nothing for me. That being said though, the only system I've played much at all in the last year is the Wii (SMB Galaxy) and that is pretty much limited to the Xmas break. My GC busted, and didn't buy a new one before leaving Japan. I c...

Re: PC Engine system card confusion and other Qs

This is actually quite interesting. I had two separate Turbo systems RGB modded, and they both came with their own pitfalls. I can't recall if I had this one or not (probably) but one of them had a decent amount of jitter. Ironically, I didn't play either of them all that much. Way too many games an...

Re: Nintendo Switch

Agreed for the most part... would love to see some "apps" on this. Doesn't Wii-U have that shit? I assume it can be added later, and we all know they will not be able to keep up w/ demand out of the gates anyway. Honestly, I just want to play the new Zelda. Not sure if I'll have time to bo...

Re: The Official WTF are YOU playing right now thread

The last time I played JSRF was when I made that semi-angry post about how it let me down after playing through the first game. I still think about it from time to time though because goddam that engine is so smooth and gorgeous and a nice improvement over the Dreamcast version. But the price you h...
