The bastard game in your collection

Postby Gaijin Punch » Wed Mar 15, 2006 11:26 pm

Everyone's gotta have one. A guilty pleasure... some weird game that just doesn't fit with the rest. For me, there's no question about it -- Descent 3. I used to play the shit out of this game. If anyone's read the FAQ, they'll know my gaming career has had a few breaks in it. Just before getting back into console gaming, a friend of mine convinced me to try out this game Descent 3, as it's prequels were so fun. I played it online, and after finally getting over a very tough learning curve (controlling that damn ship) I was hooked on the online mode. Mind you, this was in Japan before broadband. I had ISDN, and had to pay per minute for local calls until 11PM, at which point I could pay about 2500 yen a month for unlimited access until 8AM.

Needless to say, it got expensive. My local phone bills were often in the range of 20,000 yen, but I had a blast. I can remember some very cold, rainy Sundays where I would just have my joystick, a pack of cigarettes, and play Descent 3 all day. Good times that will never come back.

The graphics were never that great, and it really reaks "American Game", but something about the online play really got me. The weapons were innovative, the mechanics intuitive, and even in the craziest matches, there seemed to be a much smoother flow than playing any FPS online, where you take one headshot and are out.

Anyways, I spent $15 and got a Sidewinder Pro recently, and popped this in. There is still a very small online community that plays it, and I'm in a slightly better timezone for matches. I just got so many other games now, I don't have as much time for my guilty pleasures.

Other than that, nothing really. Just about all my NTSC-J games "go together" I would say. I have no dating sims or pachinko games at all... nor will I for a while.

Well, I still have the original Warcraft II from the time it was first released despite not enjoying RTS games anymore. And I have fond memories of Strife and Rise of the Triad. I enjoyed playing through Tecmo's Deception series, although I can't stand replaying those games. I also really like multiplayer Bomberman but who doesn't? So nothing really weird I guess.

My normal collection is composed of mostly (in this order) RPGs, fighters, shooters, sidescrollers, racers, mecha games, and other 3D action games.

Well, hmm. I don't care for dating sims except hybrids like Sakura taisen and Galaxy angel (Xbox rev is the only good console version), but I love the Pia Carrot series. The PC-FX version of the original Pia is great, but a little too pornographic. I am thinking of picking up the Saturn rev. Pia 2 on the DC is superb (PG-rated). There's something about the Pia games that makes them more than just a dating sim. Good stories and some interesting characters. Highly recommended.

I also enjoy some ore-no ryouri on the JP PSX every now and then, which is a pretty weird game, but I guess not really 'bastard'-ish. :)

I also love Mortal Kombat II & III (I guess these could be considered the real 'bastard' games I play!), and play them once and awhile on my Xbox (the Midway arcade classics versions). This is mainly for nostalgia I guess (I hate all the MK games that have come out since III), I played both of these games in the Arcades when they came out. I was only in Junior high/beginning of High school when they were released, so my best friend and I used to save up our allowance money all week and then transfer them to quarters and head down to the arcades every weekend. Good times. ;)

The whole Descent series is pretty sublime. Except for Descent 1, which made me violently nauseous to play (mostly due to the lack of the guidebot, and I wasn't used to playing games like that). I still played the hell out of it, though - I remember playing it on line with a friend of mine and my mother and father would come in and exclaim, "You're playing with JOSH(my friend's name)?". Repeat that a couple times per session and you'll capture their general bemusement of the whole concept of "online" being synonymous with MAGIC. The Freespace spin-off has yet to be topped IMHO too. There's nothing quite like being stuck between to capital ships blasting each other to bits. I played Descent 3 quite a bit as well - I loved co-op.

As far as bastard games...I wished you were talking about bastard games that you have no idea why they are in your collection. Since I want to bitch about it, I'm going to sneak it in here and then answer your question :D . Mahou Tsukai ni Naru Houhou for the Saturn. What the hell. I bought it because I thought it was 2D, and it was a local store. I still haven't played it. I don窶冲 think I ever will. It look horrendous.

Ahem.

I'd have to say Quake (PC) though. I am still enamored with the blood sprays, and the speed. Quake is my idea of a "pure" FPS - no gimmicks, no story (those three paragraphs of nonsense in the readme don't count), no fancy weapons, just pure carnage. Plus people keep making ridiculous enhancements for it, so there窶冱 always an excuse to bust it out.

Well, considering my games are 99% Japanese console titles, that "bastard game" just has to be a Western PC title, right. Well, actually Mac in this case. :)

So yeah, I'm going with "Warlords II", that slightly obscure but absolutely brilliant strategy game. It's simple and addictive in the same way that the Nectaris and Famicom Wars games are, but I always prefered Western strategy games for their open-endedness. I was so hooked on this game, it's not even funny. Haven't actually played it in years, maybe time to bust it out again. I wonder where I put it...

(Fuh)Quake is awesome. I used to play it online quite actively a year ago. It's sooo good. In my eyes there hasn't been a better online game since then.

I really should get back to it.

I used to love Initial D on Saturn, whereas everebody told me it was the worst racer you'll ever find on SS.

You should check out Maken Shao for PS2 (if you haven't already done so). It's exactly the same game, but in 3rd person. I found that version much "healthier". :)

Hmmm...bastard game eh? Looks over to game shelf I see Vay,Lunar,Popful Mail,Snatcher, My Paint,Shining Force CD......whoa...wait a minute! My Paint you say? :o
Yea I kinda collect games for my daughter's collection. I have that along with Berenstein Bears Camping Adventures Genesis on the shelf next to the Shining Force's and Phantasy Star's.
Gotta start them off somewhere right? :D
For myself a game that might seem odd to consider a must have in my collection is NHL95 Genesis. I am a big hockey fan and IMO this is still the best hockey game gameplay wise I have ever played. Great puck control allows for soem good moves. Goalie control, trades, stat tracking! means I still play this game with my buddies from time to time ;)

I have 4 of the "adult-oriented" Playaround double-ender carts for the Atari 2600... I'd have to say those are about as far out there as it gets for me. I do have a select few sports games, as well (Bases Loaded (NES), Cyberball (NES), Super Play Action Football (SNES), and Madden '02 (PS2)), but those 4 adult games are about as far from normal as they get for me.
