Thunder Hoop Strikes Back - promo video spotted

Postby Macaw » Tue Jan 12, 2010 2:36 pm

Some people may be familiar with Gaelco, a Spanish arcade game company and one of the few Western companies in the 90's that produced some superb 2D action games.

Their games include Big Karnak, Alligator Hunt, and Biomechanical Toy among others, all of which I think are fantastic games. Their most cool looking game however, TH (Thunder Hoop) Strikes Back has remained somewhat elusive due to not being playable in MAME. However I just found what appears to be some kind of promo video a Spanish dude has uploaded on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c8ybvazQ ... re=related

The game looks incredibly cool, Contra mechanics and a lot of awesome shit going on. Similar to Gaelco's other 1994 release Alligator Hunt, TH Strikes Back has a heap of stunning looking cutscenes. The art definitely seems inspired by the famous Spanish comic book artist Alfonso Azpiri.

It looks like were just gonna be teased by this until its playable in Mame. I know I'm gonna keep a look out for the pcb.

Another thing: That guys youtube page also has promo videos for a bunch of other Gaelco games. Its a pity that post-1995 the companies output has consisted almost solely on generic looking 3D racing games.

Not at all... that actually looks like a western game I wouldn't mind trying out, even in a retro/Eastern sense. Definitely looks like it was inspired from the usual suspects. I assume the hardware is somewhat obscure?

Nice stuff, never heard of it before. But if you mention Gaelco, you gotta mention Word rally 1 and 2! Great titles, even if you don't like racing games : neat arcade gameplay at its finest.

It runs on Gaelco's own hardware.

Both Thunder Hoops look like cool Juju Denestsu style games. I'll try out the first some time.

Also, I heard these people also made Risky Woods, which is a meh Makaimura clone IMO.

The team that made Risky Woods only made Biomechanical Toy, and Gaelco published it. Its a different team that was responsible for the likes of Big Karnak and TH Strikes Back.

I don't like Risky Woods either, but I think Biomechanical Toy is fantastic. It definitely has an Earthworm Jim thing going on but the stage design and visuals are just superb, and playing for score is a tonne of fun with all the scoring secrets.

As for the first Thunder Hoop game, I think its kinda fun but visually just too damn bland and boring (as far as early Gaelco goes Big Karnak is miles ahead of it in this regard). Thankfully TH Strikes back seems to be the complete opposite visually.

Not to be confused w/ the gay porn flick 'Risky Wood'.

If I knew you were after this, Macaw, I'd surely have let you know when I saw one last year (can't recall if it was on ebay or YAJ, but it was under $100, IIRC) :/

I'll try and let you you know if I come across another one...

Much appreciated UD. By the way I heard many Gaelco games have suicide batteries, I wonder if its true?

I'm also looking for the Thunder Hoop titles, Biomechanical Toy and Big Karnak. They do have suicide batteries though....

I used to play the first thunder hoop in an arcade more or less 10 years ago. It was incredibily difficult, i managed to beat it only once, but it was a great game. I never heard anyhing about it's sequels. Can someone spend a few words on them?

I may have located thunder hoop 2, however I'm reluctant to buy it unless the seller can tell me when the battery was last changed. I don't think there is a revival method for these boards yet.

Thunder Hoop boards appear on German Ebay quite often. I never picked one up though, cuz I didn't like the look of the game. Perhaps I ought to give it a second look.

I've finally gotten my hands on the sequel, which is unplayable in MAME. After playing both games, I have to say the first is an okay game, while the second is a complete overhaul. The first is very kiddie and G-rated, while the sequel has violence and animation that rivals Battletoads with a side of Mortal Kombat. The second one does not have checkpoints, but it has scrolling jumping stages and a shooting stage like in Captain America and the Avengers. I have to say that TH2 (Thunder Hoop 2) is probably one of, if not the best platformers I've played on a jamma board.

Cool, any chance of making some video :)

I'm still on the lookout for this one, how much did you pay for it?

Also more people really need to check out Alligator Hunt. The graphics on that one are just insane, Gaelco were really top tier when it came to 2d art. Thunder Hoop 2 looks to be of similar quality its just a shame there is no damn media on the net at all for it now, apart from broken mame shots.

I hope all the promo vids can be retrieved again somehow. Maybe it would be worthwhile to just email Gaelco asking them for the stuff.

I don't have a JAMMA recorder, but I can do some Iphone vids to hold you over. I'll have some up in a couple of hours.

So it's like Contra mixed with Bad Dudes. Count me in once it's available in MAME. And did I see a melee attack?

It's odd, he only does the melee when you jump on enemies. Enemies don't kill you by touching you for the most part, it has to be from one of their attacks. They can grab you and you can break free, killing them in the process.
