The Must Have Saturn Games

Postby Thomas » Mon Jul 12, 2004 12:29 am

Might be a little early for this one but since I finally bought a Saturn I'd like to know what to spend my money on. I noticed Saturn soft eBay prices have gone down recently so I'm thinking of buying myself a nice diverse collection for this summer.

Recap's list has just about every Saturn game worth mentioning... although I'm not sure how Sol Divide made it there. :)

Someday people will realize how wonderful this game is. And how perfect the port is. And what a nice extra the RPG mode is. Someday.

Burning Rangers is a quality Saturn game also. ;) Think all the rest of the games have been mentioned - NiGHTs, Radiant Silvergun, Shokyrugurentai, Battle Garrega etc... The Saturn is a Shmupers dream....

Recap: Can you elaborate on Katsugeki Monomono? I've had by eye on it for quite a while actually, but it's always been too high to buy an obscurity I know nothing about. Also got my eyes on Kunoichi Torimonochou... just never gotten around to it.

Mono Mono is a funny and pretty RPG with great character design, if I recall. I only had the chance to play it once in Japan many years ago, but it really impressed me. It got some important scores from Japanese mags, too. The only snapshots I've found in the 'net are these, sorry (I need a scanner!): Image Kunoichi Torimonochou is an adventure game with some action mini games and amazing character design. It's from Polestar, the guys behind the incredible Magical Pop'n, so can't be bad, but need to know more. There's also a PS version by GMF, which is weird, 'cause I don't think they can be the same game. Edit: Remove the pic if necessary. Too big.

Dracula X is far superior to the psx version (has more levels, enemies, bosses, weapons, and you can play as alucard, richter or maria from the beginning) Elevator Action Returns Metal Black

Most Dracula X you'll find see the PSX version as the far superior. While the Saturn has some extras in it, there's some things it's missing. Namely the fake transparencies flat out suck, plus a few other things that I've never bothered to understand. Ed Oscuro over at Digital Press is a pretty diehard retro fan. I believe he favors the Saturn over the PSX in general, but is the first to admit that the PSX version is better.... the extra character, etc. doesn't make up for the things that are lacking from the PSX version. I"ve got both, but have only played about half of the SS version.

Loading times, resolution issues and the KCE Nagoya seal instead the KCE Tokyo one are other things to consider superior the PS version. It was the original one and was created for that system's capabilities, after all.

A few pitiful extra items (and the nice boots that allow Alucard to run) and equipment, 2 lame ass areas, and a completely broken character < faster loading (quick map access for one), real transparencies, more touched up visuals

A shame considering the Saturn's 2D capabilities but hey, you can't expect much from the rush job done by KCE Nagoya, esp. since IGA nixed their GBC CV Legends game from the official CV timeline (for better or worse).

As for Recap's list, that looks pretty damn good for both fun games and valuable games (hell, I even have most of the games). Of course, I also object to Sol Divide since I hate it with all my heart, esp. after beating the story mode of the awful US PS version of it in one sitting since they removed the damn save system from the game. That took about 6 hours (4 hours to actually go through without dying) and was perhaps the most unpleasant and challenging experiences I've ever had in a game. My reward? F***ing credits.

Anyway, Valhollian is a basic 3D SRPG with 3D battle scenes. Nothing amazing from the minutes that I've played.

Was Cyberbots (LE) mentioned? After all, who wouldn't pass up a chance to play as Zero Gouki? And of course, check out The Yakyuken Special. Bwahahahahaha!

Nice, thanks. 3D crap? Removing it from the list right now. And what about Sorvice? Anyone?

I thought just the battles were 3D but the overhead map and that stuff was 2D. I thought it was all 2D but don't remember anymore.

Sorvice is an action/RPG and a card hybrid game. The actual dungeons are 3D but the town and other stuff was 2D from what I remember. It's not great but if you can get it cheap might be worth having.

I'd limit the Langrisser games down to Dramatic Edition and 4.

A few other that I don't think were mentioned.

Soul hackers
Groove on Fight
Capcom Generations 1, 5

I'd also like to add that Crows is one of the most crappy overpriced games for the system.

I popped in Groove on Fight recently, and was very displeased... I don't like 2D fighting games much in the first place, but I thought it was just too clunky.

If you have 2 people that are really good the matches can go on forever which can be good or bad depending on how you look at it. Since you don't care for 2D fighters it's probably not going to do much for you.

I didn't throw Groove on Fight 'cause it is noticeably worse than the coin-op. I have the game since day one, and I like the ugly-but-cool style and combo system but the lack of sprites' animation and loading times ruin the game for today's standards. And thanks for the writings on Sorvice, Azazel, I needed them. What do you know about Koei's Angelique and Dai Koukai Jidai series? Edit: Site's logo has changed for the better, GP.

Daikoukai Jidai is a series of strategy/adventure games that center around the age of conquest. Just got the Saturn version in (DJ2), which is basicaly a remake of the snes/pc game of the same name. The graphics and sound are souped up a little, but the loading times are unforgiveable. Angelique is a boy-dating sim (the opposite of Tokimemo) in a medieval setting. Nothing special really... might be nice for anime-crazy girls

How's the strategy part in Dai Koukai Jidai? Similar to other Koei's games as Nobunaga series? And doesn't Angelique have an RPG twist, not unlike Princess Maker?

Thanks for the kind words Recap... I'll be doing a bit more editing, but I'm much more pleased w/ this one for the time being. I'll test it out for the main page. ;) Angelique for some weird reason seems to keep popping up (there's even a game or two on the PS2, no?) I recall seeing one at a TGS, and that's all. YOu never really see it on the sales charts, but must have some weird underground following, as it's been around for ages.

Yea it's suppose to have some RPG elements in it like Princess Maker but I've never played it. Unless you like dating games I wouldn't bother with it.
