Lost Toaplan games?

Postby Pretas » Sun Feb 24, 2013 11:20 pm

I was looking on this Japanese Toaplan fansite, and saw listings for several games I've never heard of:

- Dynamic Trial 7
- Enma Daiou/Enma Daiou DX
- Power Kick (medal game)
- Distopia
- Teki Paki 2

None of these are even partially emulated. Were any of them actually released? Is there footage anywhere? Were they canceled, or did they fail location testing? I know that Toaplan didn't finish Kyukyoku Tiger II, but Takumi picked it up and released it.

Oh, and was Snow Bros. 2 actually developed by Toaplan? There's no mention of them in the copyright, just some company called Hanafram.

Only have seen DT7 out of these, Try owns one but not sure if it is dumped.

DT7 and Enma Daiou have flyers on arcadeflyers, and were likely the closest to release. DT7 has been playable at Try, its a top down view racing game similar to something like Lethal Crash Race from Video System, but I've never seen footage.

Distopia is a freakin cool looking sidescroller and had a location test. Screenshots can be seen here but be prepared to cry: http://postback.geedorah.com/extra/dist ... o-game.htm

Hey Shou, have you discovered from any of your recent arcade liaising whether anyone in Japan is confirmed to have one of those Distopia location test boards? haha

Enma Daiou is a comedic "lie-detector" game in a dedicated cab, where you answer a bunch of yes or no questions and in the end the machine dispenses a strange business card.

The business card sets actually show up on Yahoo pretty often, and the Japanese site you link to says the standard version cab has appeared in auction as well. So I guess it must have been really close to release as Macaw said or maybe it even got a very limited one.

And yes, Genkai Chousen Distopia =

Holy shit, Distopia looks incredible! It would be a tragedy if it was lost to history.

Sounds like DT7 needs to be dumped. Is the one at Try the only known board?

Is there any info on Teki Paki 2? As broken as the original game is, it's great chaotic fun in short bursts. Interested how they might have refined the mechanics.

I haven't really asked the big collectors I know as I've been searching for other stuff and received some interesting things. :) Next time I'm in touch with them, I will ask.

Do you visit the translations sections on the main site here? There's an interview w/ Uemura who specifically talks about at least Teki Paki 2 and I think Distopia but I've not read it since I translated it a couple of years ago.

Distopia is probably going to remain holy grail material forever... something tells me if it was found it would be a big let down, but if it was actually released would be one of those treasured games due to nostalgia...something like Captain Silver or Genpei Toumaden.

I read that interview, and it sounds like Teki Paki 2 wasn't even close to being finished when Toaplan folded, unlike Distopia. Must be why there aren't even any magazine screens of it. Guess I can give up on ever seeing that one.

Okay, I was unsure of what control method Ghox originally used, but I now see from the flyer that it was a combination spinner + joystick locked to vertical movement. It's sort of like SNK's Ikari Warriors/Bermuda Triangle sticks, but with a proper analog dial instead of that clicky plastic top. No way this was ever used elsewhere. Really interesting that they would go to the trouble of creating dedicated controls. I'm guessing the parts are impossible to find nowadays.

The spinners have shown up a few times on YAJ, I remember it being discussed in this forum some years back. Theres also a standard joystick version.

Cool game too, probably my favorite breakout style game. The bosses are freakin cool:

The spinners are very expensive to get ahold of these days. Paid a pretty yen for my pair. It's basically an Arkanoid spinner on top of a 2 direction joystick so you can use it for any of the optical spinner games like Arkanoid series, Cameltry, etc. That's what my stick works with.

It's good, but it can't compare to Gunbarich. :) The physics seems a little wonky to me, like it's more difficult to alter the angle of a ball's path than it should be.

I found the music in Ghox truly disappointing. Nowhere near Toaplan's usual quality.
