Sayonara: Shibuya Kaikan

Postby Gaijin Punch » Wed Aug 14, 2013 7:42 am

Cross posted at shmups.

35 years running, Shibuya Kaikan Monaco, located on Shibuya's infamous Center-gai (sometime's called basketball street by people that have no idea how to speak Japanese) will be closing down on 08/18. We will miss your generous 50-yen credits, but definitely not your awfully stale, smoke-riddled air.

Oh, that's sad. Do you know why they're closing? Went there earlier this year, and it was really crowded, so it seemed turnover was alright, but maybe rent/maintenace became a factor?

That place looks fantastic. What a shame. :(

p.s: I think that this game centre was mentioned in Brian Ashcraft's book, that's where I think I first read about it. Disappointed that when I was in Tokyo I never got to visit the place, or Ebisen for that matter.

Ebisen is good, but horribly inconvenient location wise. Shibuya Kaikan is right there in the heart of Shibuya. Great location, although I'd hate to have been in that building during the Earthquake. It is definitely an old building, and an old arcade. I had no idea it had been there for 35 years though.

Sad to see it go but it is a nasty place like GP said. It's a relic of times gone by, maybe I should go by today and take some pics.
