Cheap Games in Japan that cost a bunch elsewhere

Postby delafro » Wed Sep 22, 2004 2:46 am

I got started on this topic by thinking about Policenauts, and how it is such an esteemed game, yet you can get the Saturn version for less that 500 yen normally. Also, there's Dragon Force, a game that you can find in Japan for about 300 yen but will run you at least $50-60 in the States. Also, there's Dragon Quest 3 and 4, quite common in Japan for fairly cheap, but good luck finding any other version. Any others that you can think of for this catergory?

I need clarification: You mean JPN vs US/UK release? Or a game that's common in Japan, but for some reason, expensive elsewhere. Shining Force 3 Scenario 1 is cheap anywhere Policenauts is pretty cheap as well, but I don't think it's that expensive in the states anymore, is it? What's Shenmue, is basically the defining title for this thread Then, there's the occasional weird title: MSX Antiques for the Saturn is a $20 game sealed in the states, but easily runs 4000-5000 yen here.

Just from browsing eBay you can see the differences in price for the following games in US dollars. US Panzer Dragoon Saga $100+ JP Azel Panzer Dragoon RPG $20-$30 US House of the Dead $50+ JP House of the Dead $20+/- US Burning Rangers $40+ JP Burning Rangers $20+/- US Guardian Heroes $100+/- JP Guardian Heroes $20+/- RPG's and story/text intensive games are usually going to be the ones that have such a wide price difference but didn't a lot of the games have higher production runs in Japan also making them much more common than their US counterparts. Games that are exclusive to Japan tend to run much higher because there's a collectors market for those games. Quite a few of these exclusives are damn fine games so they have "value" in the game play that is a factor in determining the final price. How many shit games are bringing in top dollar in the international collectors market? Not as many as the good games. Other factors that drive the prices are Developer Liscence (if any) Part of series or first of a series Game play
