I've always wanted to know how well do Hentai games sell in Japan? Does sex really sell that well?

They sell extremely well (why do you think they keep making them?) The PC stuff though, is where the real smut is, and makes the console stuff look like kids games. I heard somewhere that 80% of Japanese developed PC games are hentai games, which show a lot more than panty-shots.

Yea that's about what I thought. Do you have any stats of how much some of these titles sell or anything? Actually the PC Market is actually probably closer to 90% to 95% I think. Not to mention most of those PC games are generally pretty expensive. I looked at some of my FM Town games and some of those were selling for like 12400 yen or so retail.

I've never looked, but PC software is a bit cheaper now. Shit, a few SFC games were 12,800 yen as well... one at least, and a lot right aroudn or just above the 10,000 yen marker. I think most PC stuff NOW (with everyone on Windows) is about 6800 yen... but that's just a wild guess. EDIT: Here's a list of adult games at Sofmap.

How do people get hentai games in Japan anyway? Are they embarrassed to buy it from shops? Do they resort to secret telephone calls to mail order or prefer online orders or stuff like that? Or are they open about it?

There probably more open about it. Not to mention finding used hentai is generally pretty easy from what people have told me.

Basically the rest of the free world is more open about sex than the US is. ALL video stores (even the equivalent of Blockbuster) has a porn section, although the anime stuff is limited. There's quite a few hentai-only stores in Akihabara, and quite a few customers that frequent them. For the most part, Akihabara caters to casual gamers and PC enthusiasts, although sometimes it does turn into a freak show. If I had children, I wouldn't leave them alone there. :)

Tis a pity on the curent jap pc games situation. There's only little major companies left now making non-H pc games, namely Falcom, System soft alpha, koei, Exe-create and Kogado. I find the Chinese pc game market to be the greatest. Too many shooters out of the west and too much hentai from japan... About 90% of original Chinese pc game releases are awesome historical (mostly 3 kingdoms) action and strategy games, and about all of them have 2d graphics :D The only thing thats been worrying me in recent years of following chinese pc games however is the online rpg's. Now single player games only come out every few months, and new online stuff is being released on a weekly basis :x

China has its share of crappy 3D generic 3rd person action/adventures as well though. And I personally can't stand that the 2D art looks so traditional rather than anime-esque. It's amazing how many semi-recent Chinese games are RPGs and how many of these RPGs center around romantic themes. And you're right, there's so few new Chinese single-player releases (meaning non-American PC titles) that there's nothing for me to look forward to.

Funny you guys bring this thread up. Sonic Team has a free beta test for PSO I & II: Blue Burst. I'm downloading it now to give it a whirl. You get to play for free until you get to level 20. I figure it'll be cute to give it a shot, although there's no way I'll get sucked into PSO again until PS Universe comes out. I've got too many high level characters on the GC. :)

Wow, that is insane...how do hentai games usually play anyways? Point 'n click adventure stuff? How do women react to all this hentai crap? I can't say that I like or don't like hentai, it is a little curiosity of mine once every few months, but that much porn is insane..especially since it's not even real.

Pretty much. Click. Click. Click. Porn Scene. Click. Click. Click. Porn Scene. Etc. Ad Nauseum. A lot of hentai games now even have fast-forward buttons apparently - you just skip though all the story until you get to a choice, or a porn scene. Something Awful has pretty humorous reviews of hentai games if you're curious. I personally wouldn't find static craptastic anime porn scenes reward enough to click through all the drivel. Japan is pretty male dominated place, if women have an opinion - I'm not sure that anyone really bothers to find out. They do have they Yaoi (sp?)hentai though, but I don't think that has nearly as much sex. Or tentacle rape....ugh.

You know, while most things (jobs, etc.) are male-oriented, the country is run by females. Men rarely have control of the check-book, family, or anything else. They're expected to go to work, slave for money, go out drinking, come home -> rinse, repeat. Even though they don't get the good jobs, outside of the office they're rarely stood up to against. Makes interracial marriages tricky.

Well true. From what I hear Japanese men are notoriously dependent on their women, starting in infancy with their ties to their mothers. However - jobs -> industry -> hentai, would still be completely male dominated.

It's also worth noting that ero games for women, while not as common as those for men, are by no means unheard of. As for the predominance, I can't quote actual numbers, but it's certainly extremely easy to program games that are just a series of text choices accompanied by images and the occasional serif; a low development cost and the decent sales that even mediocre porn can rely on anywhere add together to make shovelware. (Also, the market penetration of such games strikes me as similar to that of, say, Japanese animation in the US DVD market; while you might ask 50 people how many they own and come up with a total sales of 50, it'll likely be 25 each for 2 of them. Some of the "post your collection" floods on futaba are truly awe-inspiring.) Of course, there are a few gems mixed in with the crap; some of the higher-profile ero games make their way over to the console with the adult scenes cut and do respectably on the basis of story and art.

Are the ero games for women yaoi stuff?

Some, but not all. I'm not particularly familiar with that segment of the market, so I can't give a percentage; however, I've seen both "you're a girl, pick a boy" and "you're a boy, pick a girl that reminds you of you" mentioned and/or screenshotted by others.

After playing such "classics" like Steam Hearts' and Advanced Variable Geo, I decided to take a look at what Giga was up to these days. I ended up with Baldr Force, which turned out to be quite a good game. Features a really fun 2D robot shooting battle system. Its quite customizable, and plays quite fast and combo heavy. The majority of the game is the extremely long story mode, but its actually very well written for the most part, and I enjoyed it even with rather limited Japanese skills. It does have some rather nasty scenes, but they are not all that common. Also both the DC and PS2 ports had these removed thankfully. (I actually own all 3, personally the DC port is crap, but the PS2's is quite good with a few extras other then just new CGs).

Also Duel Savior, made by the same team is also a really fun game, plays kind of like a Tales game but its much closer to a real fighting game, and you fight dozens of enemies at once. Overall a surprisingly solid game, and not quite as nasty in the H-department. It has a porn-free PS2 port now too, but I haven't played it.

If anyone is interested I wrote a long review of the PC version about 2 years ago to give people an idea of what the DC version was gonna be. Surprisingly the thread is still going to this day. HERE. I am also working on a Baldr Force translation, but its quite slow and won't be done for probably another year or more.

Is Duel Savior basically an adv game with beat-em-up action? Or is it more complicated than that?

Pretty much your standard multi-path adventure game. Each girl has her own path, and some have to be completed before others due to plot progression and the difficulty increases by path as well.

Game is divided into chapters, in each one you'll generally go through 1-2 hours of dialog, the important stuff is mandatory, but there is also a map with icons so you can go after a specific girl. (Go out of order though and you get a bad ending). Every chapter you'll hit a part with battles. In the beggining of the game these are short, towards the end you might due 6 battles straight in a row.

Combat looks like a Tales game, but it plays more as a fighter since you have specific moves that can be comboed into each other. And the moves are "single action" only. (Not like Tales where hitting X does a 6-hit attack). You have a meter that doubles as both super and guard gauge. Meaning if you fill up all of it as super then you have 0 guard meter left. The meter gets one diamond bigger every time you level up. 2 diamonds of super can be used to do one super move, a single diamond can be used to cancel into anything else. (Super cancled right into another super can be done if you have the diamonds). Combos are pretty much unlimited if you can keep them going. You can also "perfect guard" moves in order to parry them. Game even has a mode so you can practice parrying against all badguy attacks, so parrying a 42 hit boss super is quite possible if you put the work in.

I guess its a beat-em-up thats controls more like Street Fighter, but is even crazier then the Tales series since there are many more enemies and the game moves really fast. All girls are playable once you've gotten their endings, and Survival mode has a good 30+ characters you can be. So its fun and crazy if you like quirky SD anime styled games, and fairley deep too. One of the girls is undead and she attacks by throwing her head like a boomerang :D
