gamengai High Score Competition The First: Snow Bros.

Postby Gaijin Punch » Tue Nov 06, 2007 5:55 am

Platform: MAME/PCB (JPN)
Auto Fire: Sure, why not
Credits: 1
Continues: Of course not
Prize: You can view a high res pic of the prize pool here. There are basically 8 items:

-Super Mario Advance 2 POP
-Street Fighter Zero Saturn Fan poster
-Capcom foldout ad (The back is a full poster of some game called -Night Slashers or something)
-An absolutely horrible, cheesy Sega calendar (mostly VF... but w/ real people)
-Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes and Metal Gear Solid 3 decals
-Ninja Gaiden flyer
-PC-Engine Gal's Collection - very cheesy bonus from some magazine
-Yukawa Mobile phone strap

It's all crap, but hey -- it's something. I'll say the top 2 places get 4 items each, but #1 will get first pick across the board.

NOTE: To qualify for a prize, you need to have registered before Oct 1, 2007 or have a decent post count (like 20, as of now). Basically don't come in here as a stranger and expect to win something.

Score format:
Name - Score - Stage

Code: Select all

Player               Score    Floor
-----------------------------------
Zebra Airforce   1,418,780      30
JoshF            1,279,280      23

inc                852,080      14
zinger             472,110      15
Sparky             288,890      14
Greatsaintlouis    244,750      15

Only two credits this time, and the first was practically wasted figuring out how the game plays. It's kindof like an evil Bubble Bobble.

Greatsaintlouis - 141,290 - Floor 8

If we're playing in MAME, I assume we just use the default settings?

This game is alot of fun!
The only thing I don't like is that you basically need a speed-up to score well.

After a few more plays, I've discovered this game is designed with a very Gradius-esque "Lose your powerups and take it from behind" mentality that severely limits your scoring opportunities and sends you on your way to a premature game over should you die even once. Delightful.

Greatsaintlous - 244,750 - Floor, uh 15, I think?

hah, that's exactly what I thought! Leave it to Toa to put a prohibitive powerup system in their game.

I will be sticking to this game for a while, as long as I'm enjoying it, but not competing. The reason is that I'm not too keen on time limit scoring, the shmups.com tournament put me off. I'm really bad at prioritizing, and I always end up doing half-bad on both scoring and my studies. Just saying, good luck to all!

The defaults in MAME should be accurate. Factory defaults for Japanese version: difficulty setting B [normal]; 3 lives at start; extend at 100,000 points only. (all physical DIPS set to OFF position)

score up!

I whole heartedly agree. I welcome people to continue playing the games here competitively, but, I think setting a time limit will kick it off. I will probably continue to play the game as I do enjoy it (way more than anything we played in STGT07).

I realize some people here were possibly on the committee to choose the games, but I thought flat out removing Progear was a cheese move. Even dumber was to have two modes of the same game the same week. I was our team's anchor for Progear... I spent quite a while gearing up for it, and improved my score by a good 3 mil and never even got past stage 4. So yeah, that really set the tone for me for that week and the rest of the tourney.

My awesome scores will have that effect on people.

BTW GP I'm updating my scores in my first post.

When we're done you could leave the results up, and add a high score table with no time limit. That way there's no pressure, and the people who are playing now will be able to improve once the competition is over.

WTF... no missed to about floor 18 w/ 725,000... then it went south.

score up!
inc - 852,080 - 14

Lesson learned on another credit: never pick up a green potion (super-inflation mode) when you've triggered bills. When the green potion wears out, the floor advances without dropping the bills. Yellow, blue, and red potions can be grabbed without incident.
