Black Dragon

Unrivalled sidescroller. Please note which version you are playing. The western version (Black Tiger) is altered and easier.

Black Dragon

emphatic - 2'095'150 - ALL - PCB
Imhotep - 2'001'700 - ALL - Mame
zinger - 412'800 - Stage 6 - Mame

Black Tiger

Imhotep 317'800 Stage 5 Mame

I buy the first and the third weapon upgrades, armors a too fragile. I find around 3 secret items a stage, they help a lot.

How many stages are in this game? I've always found it quite difficult.

eight I think, but I've never played it further than stage 6. It's not an easy game, lifes are lost quickly if situations get out of hand. But it's still quite predictable and steady progress is possible.

Imhotep 1'906'550 ALL Mame

After one month of absence and a comeback yesterday, I cleared the game today, which is some crazy shit considering I've never passed boss 5 before. And I credit fed to the end only once.

I guess there's two important things that made it possible:

- by pressing up you jump higher. I've only figured it out yesterday, because in stage 7 you are forced to use it. Makes the player more agile and reacting to situations much easier.

- I bought a shitload of armors in the second half of the game, as by the time you can afford the lv5 whip, money is not an issue anymore. And I always kept 3+ potions

My opinion still stands that this is the best game in the genre that I've played.

Congrats! That's quite a feat!
I might give this another shot when I put my monitor back on it's side.

thanks GP

played some more:

Imhotep 2'001'700 All Mame

slight improvement, broke 2 mil.

some points:

- Dragons are avoided best by getting a hit off the low damage fire balls and then pass them during invincibility. Works with Guardians, too, but you can also high jump over them

- I find 3 extra lives during the game (Stage 2, 4, 6) and 3 secrets per level (only 2 in Stage 3). Projectiles hitting a secret-bearing wall will leave a yellow flame instead of a blue one

- From stage 5 onwards (or sooner), I equip myself with good armors. I buy potions and keys even in stage 1.

Congrats! I also find this game to be pretty difficult. Any chance for a replay?

Maybe I'm going mad, but I never figured out this high jump you're speaking of.

Count this as a second vote for a replay.

just hold up while jumping.

I've never done a replay before. I'm playing on a Mac via MacMAME. Any ideas how to do it best?

edit: @GP, maybe I've figured out why you believe to have problems with the high jump. When you stand still, you always do the same jump (high), but when you're moving and jumping diagonally, it makes a difference if you hold up or not. So you can't "test" it while standing still.

zinger - 412'800 - Stage 6 - MAME

Capcom sure knows how to reward you after every difficult part you learn, stage 6 looks really cool. Generally, I just can't believe how well thought-out this game is.

I assume you're playing the japanese version?

I agree about the game's quality, I vastly prefer it over the more scripted design of i.e. Ghouls'n'Ghosts.

Just saw this thread:

emphatic - 2,095,150 - ALL - PCB

The Japanese game (Dragon) awards a cool million for the last boss. Jumping can be done in three different ways. Pulling lever in the direction an pushing jump (regular), pulling the lever diagonally up and pressing jump (long/high jump) or standing still, jumping then pulling the lever (high side jump/ shorter).

Thanks. I recorded a replay a while ago but didn't know that pausing while recording breaks the replay. *facepalm* So everything worked fine up until the start of stage four as the phone rang and I had to pause. I'll record a new one when my bandaged left hand is back in business displaying all the secrets I know of.
