It's a Capcom game. It's designed as a Versus game, but I think the arena-based FTGs hold up better in single-player than stuff like Street Fighter.

I know it's Capcom, but they have a US office, too, no? I've seen western names all over the flyer, which is why I was axing.

Kevin Eastman and Simon Bisley are the only western guys in the credits. It's not Final Fight Revenge 2.

Sat down and took a proper go at Slap Fight (Megadrive version), and cleared it. On loop 2, was sniped by that sniper in parsec 8 and pretty much quit (wasted all my lives to it). Game is short and easy, yet satisfying.

I'm trying to get the Slap Fight MD clear, but I keep getting demolished in parsec 77. Rock!

sniped by that sniper

Guess he was doing his job then.

Hah. I usually dodge him, though. Speaking of which, he hasn't touched me again since.

Also, I almost 1-lifed it through the first two loops of Slap Fight MD. O_o
Time to start playing this on a higher difficulty, methinks.

Image Fight (2 loops)*
X-Multiply (1 loop; I'll beat the second loop eventually)

*Replay available here.

Wow -- isn't Image Fight amazingly difficult? Will have to check these out when I'm not so busy. Same w/ X-Multiply from what I remember.

Image Fight is one of Irem's hardest (R-Type II is a little harder imo). I beat the second loop after about a month of practice and note-taking. (E.g. "after killing this wave of drones, vertically align left edge of ring laser weapon w/ this blue star in background. Kill two lines of drones from upper right, then immediately aim down.")

X-Multiply is much easier than Image Fight. It's challenging without being soul-crushingly difficult. I'd say it's about as hard as the original R-Type.

That sounds like the definition of "not fun" to me. Hat goes off to you, sir!

Updated my list with:

Air Gallet
Deathsmiles II :whack:
Same Same Same (2-10, Megadrive)
Storm Blade (2-ALL)
Vimana (7 loops, 10,000,000+)
Twin Cobra (2-5)
Shikigami no Shiro II

Heh. Memorizers aren't for everyone, I'll admit. Losing eight or so lives at a checkpoint can be frustrating.

Contra 4

I just got it a couple of days ago, but the constant extends (and the double machine gun) make it not so hard at all.

Which one is Contra 4 again?

Congrats on the Cyvern 2-ALL. What was the MAME clock at?

Contra 4 is the DS one (Contra Dual Spirits). Very solid game with lots of fan service, I give it a thumbs up.

Thanks, re: Cyvern. MAME clock was at around 10 hours but I had 3 hours already clocked on there from a shmups.com competition a few years ago. I played the PCB for the first time at HEY and got to 2-5 but my score was booty. I'd like to finish it with around 18 or 19 million (my 2-ALL score was 16+).

Might bust it out for ye old loop 1 some time. I've played about the first stage to get a taste, and liked it.

You try the Wii Contra. It's one of 3 games for the Wii I have, and quite fun, although it's taken a back seat to the PS3 and BluRay collection now that I got a big TV.

The only thing I've hated about the Contra games over the years is endless or might as well be endless scoring (respawns). That series is dying for a time limit and stage bonus.

Add Cannon Dancer.

Got 3 games I got relatively close to... or at least too far into to quit:
Crack Down
Joe & Mac Returns
Magical Crystals

Choices, choices.

Added:

Akai Katana
Raiden Fighters 2 & Jet
Xexex

I'm in the mood to try to pad my list with 1-credit-clears. I think Randorama holds the unofficial Western record with 113 arcade shooters beat, might be kind of fun to chase that.

Edit: My count is at 56. Long way to go...

How hard is Akai Katana?

Not very (if you ignore scoring). I beat it on my fourth attempt. Probably the easiest last boss in all of Cave's library.

I miss the days when even a non-scoring 1CC was a challenge. Gone they are.

Not going to be able to add anything to my list unless I clear Bonanza Bros. The only thing I've been playing lately. An obscure one, I know. It's actually pretty good.

I've only seen the flyer. Bizarre, to say the least. What type of game is it?
