gamengai High Score Competition The Second: Bay Route

Postby Macaw » Mon Dec 21, 2009 4:10 pm

Platform: MAME/PCB (JPN)
Auto Fire: Yes, any configuration allowed
Continues: Well if you continue, your score will be shit and you wont win!
Prize: Something from GP, maybe he'll also throw in a few porn tapes while he's at it.
Finish Time 29th December, US time... Yeah, rather broadly defined I know.

The votes were tied so I went with Bay Route because GP voted for it.

Contra inspired scrolling action with a post apocalyptic setting, developed by Sun Soft and released in 1989. A lot of cool backgrounds and fun stage design.

Purple capsules upgrade current weapon, blue capsules increase max energy and green capsules replenish energy. Being lucky enough to get a whole bunch of blue capsules and then fill them out with a green will make things much easier for yourself, otherwise you will have to rely much more on your skill.

Cool. Will throw in a few credits tonight me thinks. Wasn't feeling Thunderfox, but maybe we can do it right after for shits & giggles.

Threw up a better flyer scan. Since the forums are in the same domain as the main site, you don't get the manlove picture when hot linking.

M-manlove picture?!

EDIT: Okay, we'll lead this off with something crappy.

gsl - 63700 - 2

Those jetpack guys are pricks, especially how they can often manage to find a hole in the flamethrower weapon to do their kamikaze cockslap thing.

Its best to just use the shotgun (first weapon once powered up) and run forwards while aiming it diagonally. And while autofire will fuck up the flame thrower, it will save you a lot of button pressing for the shotgun.

I only got MAME to recognize the US Set 1 ROM... which one are we using? It didn't have sound either. :/

A few versions ago some of the filenames for the bay route zips were altered. If you have a new version of MAME then get the newest sets from sites that update frequently (*cough* planetemu). Sound should work.

Unless anyone knows of any differences between versions then I guess we can just use any version, although JPN version would be preferred just in case there is some really small difference.

Damn, what's the latest version of Mame? Mine should be semi-up-to-date actually.

0.135 I think. The bay Route filenames were altered in 0.133.

Yeah, after getting the spread shot powered up a few times, I'm wondering if any of the other weapons are even worth bothering with? The last one (shoots the exploding balls) is pretty helpful for clearing multiple guys once you've got a few powerups, but the super-slow fire rate leaves you pretty screwed if you happen to miss a fast-approaching enemy.

I think I'm on 0.132, or something. Will need to upgrade.

And then they decide to throw a crazy-ass hoverbike stage at you.

Now I've got Set 3 World only :/
Using 135.u3. I can't figure out how to search from Planet Emu so that kind of fucks me.

EDIT

Okya, got a few credits in:

Gaijin Punch - 48,250 - Stage 2

Totally fucked once you lose the spread shot.

Scores updated.

Wasn't able to reproduce my pre tournament credit, things fucked up hard in stage 6.

The 3rd and 5th bosses are total pricks. 3rd boss in particular has a habit of forcing you to run the time out :D

Yeah, the third boss was annoying. Wasn't too difficult, really, but when you only have one side left you need to hit, it gets obnoxious waiting around for it to move so you have a clear shot.

So is there actually a time limit for each level, and what happens if you go past it? I've thought I've heard a terribly digitized "Hurry up!" occasionally, but I'm not entirely sure. Still trying to figure out the multi-syllable death yell lots of the cannon fodder guys make.

Just spotted this thread, thought I may give it a shot.

But how can I set autofire on MAME OS X 0.135? Couldn't find it and without autofire this game is almost as annoying as Vimana

The hoverbike part is the easiest in the game. Just stay in the center area with the spread gun.

I still get tripped up by those damn near invisible mines in stage 2. :(

Until you get the spread, what are you supposed to use on them? I don't think ever I've thrown a grenade successfully.

You can also get them with the tip of your flamethrower.

Wow, the difficulty really ramps up in that last part of stage 5 when suddenly EVERYTHING starts shooting bullet sprays at you. Unfortunately, you lose the spread shot here and you're screwed in a very big way.

Getting damn close though!

It's hard to enter your initials with autofire.

The random nature of the capsule items can really help or hinder a run. I've gone some runs with maybe one or two green or blue capsules period, and I've gone a few where in places that I need the spread shot, like stage 3, I just keep getting greens and blues. The last run was pretty lucky in that I had only one blue, but kept running into a green just when I would be close to losing a life.

Yeah there's a time limit. Cant remember if you die automatically or if some flying thing comes and kills you, but I certainly remember dying from time outs a few years ago on boss 3.

An unavoidable thing flys out and gets you like in Super Contra.
