Games w/ MIDI

So I found a yellowed to hell Roland CM-500 in a hardoff for 2,000yen. It looks ugly as hell, but works perfectly. Been using it to play through Doom again and it sounds incredible.

So what Japanese games support MIDI and are worth playing? It seems the X68000 had a lot of great games w/ MIDI, but I don't have one of those yet. I do have an FM Towns though. I know Genocide 2 supports MIDI, but I need to get a Towns MIDI card first though. Any other Towns games use it?

For my list of X68000 games that use MIDI, check my site.

I definitely recommend a MIDI setup if you can get an X68000. DaiMakaiMura with MIDI on a powerful amp is astonishing.

Very few FM Towns games have MIDI support at all really. Shou had this list on Tokugawa:
Genocide Squared
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
Might & Magic III
Return to Zork

I'm sure he'll add more here if he knows of them.

I've just bought Monkey Island 2, as an aside. Of the six Lucas Arts adventures, I'm just missing Zak at this point.

So the Kings Quest and Ultima ports don't support MIDI? Lame. Not surprising though since Fujitsu was damn proud of the CD-ROM drive.

For X68k there seems to be several models of MIDI cards up on Yahoo. Since I'd be using my CM-500 (basically an MT-32 and SC-55 in one module), does the version of MIDI card matter?

The cards are the same as far as I know in terms of outputting the music. However, the System Sacom SX-68M2 has nonstandard ports and needs a special cable (I have this model). The SX-68M has normal MIDI output. I use a SC-88VL which works fine. The CM-500 should be fine for everything as far as I can remember. I can't check my games as they're in storage since the tsunami but I seem to remember the likes of Gradius II mentioning it.

I never had gotten the MIDI card in my Towns to work! From the games I have, the ones MK mentioned are the ones which had MIDI support written on the box.

My FMT Fresh HDD died and I don't have the original OS install discs so my new FMT HDD is not working right. If anyone knows the FMT well, I'd appreciate some help. :)

I don't have the box for King's Quest V but i'll take a look at the manual when I get home. Pretty sure none of the Ultima ports support MIDI but they're damn good. 6 is one of my all time favs.

brings back memories of linking up my Casio keyboard via midi to the Atari ST and playing Karate Kid 2 (with the keyboard providing a midi-produced "Glory of Love")

Does DaiMakaiMura support only a special MIDI module (like Roland only) or is it using General Midi standard?

The manual says it supports GM, and lists these modules:
Roland SC-33, SC-55. SC-55MkII, SC-155, CM-300, CM-500
KORG AG-10, 05R/W
KAWAI GMega, Gmega LX
YAMAHA TG-100

Mine is an SC-88, and that works perfectly.

Thanks for the info. I suspected it was General Midi as i did some test with various GM compatible MIDI modules (like TG-100) and it sounded good, but was never sure of the GM support.

It's difficult for me to research this kind of stuff as i have no knowledge in japanese :-/

Have you seen my list regarding the X68000 games? Ask me about specific titles and I can check the manuals. I've noted which ones don't support the MT-32.

I edited the list recently, though I have to make more changes. I've written 源平討魔伝 as Gempai Toumaden instead of Gempei Toumaden for some reason.

I'm also writing a page on using the SRAM to save high scores on the Anthology games, though getting it set up on an emulator to take screen shots is hard, and I might have to take photos of the actual machine's display.

Well, it would be nice if you added detailed info on all games that has MIDI support, that page would be great for reference then :)

I am mostly interested in Atomic Robo-kid as the arcade music is awesome... it probably supports MT-32 only as it is such an old game.

I sold Atomic Robokid, along with many other games. Some are for sale now, I need the space.

BTW here are some recordings from DaiMakaiMura using some Yamaha MIDI modules that support GM... Yamaha TG100, MU90 and MU1000.
I used an X68k emulator to send midi data.

Dug out an old Yamaha TG100 out of Hardoff for a 1,000yen lol. I must say for pure GM based games, this thing sounds way nicer then any of my Rolands. Here's the X68k version of Daimakaimura on this thing.

Out of those games except for Murder Club and Illusion City (don't have either but Illusion City MSX works fine with the SC55mkII), only Genocide works with the stock Fujitsu MIDI card from what I recall. The Western games all wanted a format it didn't support.

I don't have Illusion City either. But I do have Murder Club. It simply says, if a MIDI card is detected, it will be used, and game is meant for GS.

I've seen 3 MIDI card types on yahoo over the years. Fujitsu had the 403 and 403A. I think the 403 has both midi ports and an SC-55 internally built into it. While the 403A has no internal module, it's just a MIDI interface board. I also saw a System Sacom one once that was also just an interface card.

I have the 403 and it has built in GS but never seen the 403A or any 3rd party variant!
